Mumbai, Dec 13 (IANS) Randhir Kapoor says he is not interested in remaking his father Raj Kapoor's 1951 classic 'Awara' as it would be impossible to find actors of the same calibre that the film's original cast had.
'Many people came to me and my brothers (Rishi and Rajiv) and asked why don't we remake 'Awara'. I told them that it is absolutely impossible to imitate the classic 'Awara' which is loved so much till today,' Randhir told reporters at the launch of the book 'The Dialogue of Awara; Raj Kapoor's Immortal Classic'.
Written by author-documentary filmmaker Nasreen Munni Kabir, the book was released Saturday, two days before the 85th birth anniversary of legendary Raj Kapoor.
'Where will I get Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Nargisji and where will I get that innocent looking Shashi Kapoor? I would be making a fool of myself by trying to imitate the film because I won't have actors of that calibre again, even if I copy it frame by frame,' he added.
Raj Kapoor was only 27 when he made 'Awara'. Released in 1951, it became one of the most successful films in his career.
'The Dialogue of Awara...' has the original story, dialogues and screenplay along with the screen shots of the movie.
'When Nasreen Munni Kabir approached me with the idea to transform this great film into a book, I got very excited as it's one of my favourite films ever. I discussed it with my brothers and they were also very keen to bring this film in book form for today's generation to see, read and understand what 'Awara' was all about,' said Randhir.
Thanking the Kapoor family, Kabir said: 'I'm extremely thankful to the Kapoor family. Without their support this wouldn't have been possible. It's by continuously finding new ways to talk about iconic films, we can keep them alive. A book is a way of keeping record of a film in a different way.'
Rishi Kapoor was also present at the event.
How Raj Kapoor Make that?
Same time I will Add more stuff that I find to this topic
Lats start with Awaara.
In the end of the song Ghar Aaya Mera Perdesi Rita(Nargis) and Raju show in the left side of the screen and Jaaga Show in the Right side of the screen. Jaaga Get more and more big from Rita and Raju. And He have a knife in his hand And he threatening on Raju. Raju fold and on the right screen Rita show up when she reach out her hands to catch Raju when he keep folding.
What I think is that this shoot woes make by two slide projector and one Camera. One slide projector woes screened on the right side and the second on left. The two slide projector work in the same time and the Camera Shoot every thing that happened on the screen.
The Both part shoot in the same Room (In the Studio) and in the same situation
Dreams seller
After I read at I start to Understand how much it is true and how much Raj woes Know what that will happened in his Movie. there no many movie that you can find Raj have faight or same thing other bad. Maybe just same like:
Awaara, Amber, Chhalia, Dil Hi To Hai, Parvarish, Ashiana, Aah, Main Nashe Men Hoon, Kanhaiya , Do Ustad, Shriman Satyawadi.
Raj Kapoor get many Script. Script that turn to be big Movies But he didn't Directed them, from his differentiation this movie woes not include his dream. the dream that he wont to sale to his viewer.
maybe many people will say that Raj kapoor movies they not a dream they the True the reality. they right he include reality in his movies. the poor, the sadness, there Thief, there poor kids and moor.
But I Will tell you that He woes Sale as a dreams Dreams about Love. Behind all this poor behind all this crime every thing come with love. In life we have lots Of poor people that given up about change they life and not believe that they can get in love and marry because they don't have enough money for buy house, to take care about they kids, send them to school, to buy them clothes. (Shree420)
And then Raj show them that there is away to live if we work together.
from my side this look like a Love dream. Raj Kapoor Give hope to his viewer that they can change.
People say that Life is not Movie but Raj Kapoor Movie will always be the life our life.

Mehmood Book - who write this Book
It from Mehmood Book
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
I am so angry with the person that Write this book. It sound like he dont know noting about Making movies.
When Raj and Mehmood work on Parvarish Mehmood woes stile name as a new actor. Raj Kapoor woes already poplar. The story also talk moor about Raj Kapoor Character and Raj Also have moor Scene shoot on this movie moor then Mehmood...
The song "Oh Mama" that Raj Kapoor and Mehmood Dancing together is one of the favorite song That I like from this movie.
And if you will see this scene again and again you can find the amazing connect between Raj Kapoor and Mehmood they wily look in this film like a two amazing Brother.
I dont know what the person that write this story say about the part from the movie when Raj Kapoor and Mehmood Play with the sword after all there a script that it write to them what to say in any part and the Director tell them how to play.... who say that they say what they wont?
Second.... when Raj Kapoor work on same movie that he dont directed at. He do what the director tell him to do with out try to get his Idea about the movie. the only thing that Raj Alway say to the director is that He be like that Mukesh will sing his song...
After all I like Mehmood. I think he wily funny Actor and I wily like the way he work with Raj Kapoor in Parvarish, Shriman Satyawadi and in Abdullah.
How people get this book out..... this person need to learn moor about movie maker ... It make me angry....
Bewafa
All the neighborhood laugh about her and ridicule on her. But when the real thing happened every one get quiet and have mercy on Roopa.
Roopa Meet a man name Raj that he also live in the same neighborhood. Raj help her to get money for her drunk grandfather every day with out asking pay back.
Until one day when raj woes not in his home Roopa Grand Father throw her out from the house.
Roopa woes so sad about her life she don’t like her live and she try to suicide but then she think to her self first try to live your life.
Roope walk away she don’t know where she going but she keep going.
Then she meet an artist not a big artist but all his draw woes fulling in Felling. When he see Roopa Sleeping next the street Lamp he start drawing her with out stop even for a minute. When Roopa wake up she woes see the artist and scream on him. After that Roopa know that this artist only wont to draw her he wont her to help him to finish the drawing by sit in the same pust. Roopa agree.
The Artist Ashok take Roopa to his studio there the both create many Drawing. Drawing of Pain, sadness, Happiness, Rich, Poor and moor
After all this years all this drawing get to be famous and the both get to be the most rich people.
The love woes built between Ashok and Roopa and the Both decide to Marry soon.
Then Raj back to Roopa Life and Roopa Get in Love With Raj. The Both woes Speend long time together. Ashok Fell same thing not ok abot Raj. He also woes Hit by Roopa Because she woes go out with Raj But he woes also fell same thing not ok about him.
In the End Roopa wind out that Raj woes get into an argument with his frind that ask for him to stole Roope jewelry and Ashok He is the one that love her.
Raj woes Kill by is friend after he don’t bring his to his friend the jewelry of Roopa. When Roopa come back home to Ashok she find him dead after he suicide. After roopa see Ashok die she get crazy and all her drawing that woes set on the walls woes blame her that she kill Ashok. In the end Roopa also die.
The movie Bewafa is a complicated movie. It build by good story and good stars ones of the biggest and the popular stars.but the way that it woes directed make the movie to a confused movie.
Why Raj help her in the beginner and when she get rich he wont to stole from her? Why ashok don’t tell her that he love her and where goes the marriage Idea?
This wily weird.
Confused Movie
I say the movie 6 time until now and it stile look to me a confused movie. All the charcthers in this movie are so darkness. Ever y characters start from poor or failure. Nargis Character Roopa woes wily same to the audience situation. In the beginner she have a drunk and after he get out from the house she thinking to start his life. Then when she get two mans in her life her character get same to the audience situation. She don’t know who she should choose. The Handsome man that help her with her grandfather or Ashok the man with the good heart that help her to to be successful. Every thing Confused.
Nargis Character get to many conflict in this movie. But one thing wily not sound to me ok.
Raj Kapoor Character. Raj Always try to hint to Roopa that he is not nice person like she think he is. Like the part with the birds we can know that Raj is a man that live alone and after you see all the movie you can know that why.
But I also don’t know if her wily love Roopa his character so darkness wily so darkness. In this movie I fell like Raj have two face. But I sure there woes a love in at.
Moor Points that make me nerves about this movie. How long Ashok take for tell to Roopa that he love her. What about the end? Did Roopa wily die in the end?
Same good Point on the movie
I love the story of this movie but I don’t like how the script it woes write it mess every thing up. Raj kapoor Character Kind change from the other character that he play. This show that bad people also have heart even they need to do same thing to they lover. His character change mask many time what make the audience not know if he is the good or the bad one.
The drawing that woes draw for this movie are amazing I love them all but the most amazing Draw woes the last one of Raj and Roopa and Ashok leave the house with pain in his heart. This draw show the real felling of Ashok that he woes hide all the movie.
And how we forget the dance part of Raj kapoor we cant forget this funny part so funny but also so curious.
The song that use on this movies also make in the same level that the movie is. The three first song are happy but then they turn to be sad same to the movie. I Just like 3 song from this movie
My point to this movie is 7/10
The true I Woes like to change the end of the movie.

Shailendra
Birth: 30th August 1923
Birthplace: Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Profession: Poet, Bollywood Film song Lyricists
Born in Rawalpindi on 30th August 1923 as Shankardas Kesrilal Shailendra, Shailendra was the eldest of the four sons of Parvati Devi and Sri Kesrilal. During his childhood days his family moved to Mathura for good but the accidental death of his mother after the shift caused a deep pain for Shailendra, which almost turned him an atheist.
Shailendra started his career with the orthodox method of joining the government organization and lead his secure life. His job in Indian Railways brought him to the city of Bombay in 1947, when the Indian freedom struggle was at its best. The stereotype and technical aspect of his job was totally out of line with is artistic nature. He spent more of his duty hours writing poetry than toiling in the workshop. His Incharge always used to complain about his working habits and was the cause of general resentment.
Raj Kapoor discovers Shailendra
Shailendra decided to take part in the Freedom struggle in his own style. He used to write verses and fiery poems, which would ignite the masses. His poem ‘Jalta hai Punjab’ was a highlight and when reading out aloud during a public meeting, Raj Kapoor caught eye of him. Raj Kapoor saw an emerging star for Indian history and expressed his desire to buy the poems Shailendra has written for his new production. Shailendra, the young patriot blood refused to do so. But due to some domestic reasons and responsibilities, Shailendra approached Raj Kapoor and agreed to his terms. His first project was ‘Barsaat’. ‘Barsaat’ is one of the musical hit of the last century.
Shailendra had best of his association with Shankar-Jaikishan, but shared a equally pleasant rappot with musical giants of those days, like Salil Chowdhary (Madhumati), S. N. Tripathi, (Sangeet Samrat Tanseen), S.D. Burman (Guide and Bandini) and Pt. Ravi Shankar (Anuradha).
He won the Filmfare award for Best Lyricist thrice. Out of the three two were won in consecutive years. The first came in 1958 for the song ‘Ye mera deewanapan hai’ from the film Yahudi, and the second in 1959 for the evergreen ‘Sab kuch seekha hamne’ from Anari. In 1968 Shailendra won it again for the third time for ‘Main gaaun tum so jaao’, from 'Brahmachari'.
Shailendra considered his life as his real poetry. He used to derive inspiration from his walks along Juhu beach every morning. He wrote songs for almost all occasions of life, let alone ordinary situations. Those lyrics were vibrantly alive, in the sense they went far beyond the context of the film situation for which they were intended, and lived on long after the film itself had passed from memory. There is a Shailendra song for any emotion, any situation, from birth to death, such was his versatility.
Shailendra's end days
It is quite ironical that for the man who loved life so much, the spectra of death always haunted him. He was obsessed by death. There was no fear involved, but a kind of helplessness drew him towards it. His producing Teesri Kasam caused him several heartaches and it was also the ultimate cause of his death. But what bothered him was not the film's failure at the box-office, but that his investment in friends he trusted and loved went wrong. Shailendra was admitted to the hospital on December 13 1966, but on his way he decided to stop at the famous cottage at the RK Studios to call on Raj Kapoor, where he promised R.K. that he would complete the lyrics for ‘Jeena yahan marna yahan’ for Mera Naam Joker. That was one promise he could never keep, for Shailendra died on the following day, which also happened to be R.K’s birthday. Reading the following lines from 'Anari' can see his obsession for death:
"Ke mar ke bhi kisi ko yaad aaenge
Kisi ke aansuon mein muskuraenge
Kahega phool har kali se baar baar
Jeena isi ka naam hai"
Lyricist Shailendra is most remembered for his outstanding achievements with Raj Kapoor and Shankar Jaikishan in almost all the R.K. films. His death on December 14, 1966 saw one of the leading lights of the film industry extinguished.

One week to remember; Watching RK films at cinema
I'm back with a report of an unforgettable week end in Florence.
It all started few weeks ago when I came to know that the River to River Film Festival was showing some RK's movies honoring him twenty years after his death.
I went there with a group of aficionados willing to see the films as much as I did...
Florence itself is some amazing city you want to visit once in your life, but the excitement was all for the movies...needless to say that it has been the first time for me to watch RK films at a movie theater...well it was Sunday 7th of December and me and my group of friends came to lunch at an Indian restaurant, we were 12 at that time, chatting and eating happily and checking for the clock as we did not want to miss Awara!!
Yes on the afternoon we were going to watch the special film and we were all so happy, up till now I still can't believe it but...we arrived at the cinema and there we met other friends for a total of 17 people almost.
The magic was about to begin, just from the entrance of the movie hall as there were posters from the films Awara, Shri 420 and Bobby.
The hall was full and many among the audience were watching the film for the first time.
How can I express the magic, the dream that has been being there, looking at people's reactions to the film, I was totally fascinated from seeing for the first time in my life Raj saab on a big screen...geez was he the handsomest or what?? So young, elegant, soulful
The audience was captured by the story, the characters and the songs...in the darkness of the cinema I got emotional more than once!!
At the end a big applause came spontaneous from the audience and my friends and I were so happy, the air around us was electric with the magic of RK's Awara, that lovable little/big vagabond has had the ability once again to conquer the hearts of people no matter the distance in time, place or culture.
Next day it was the turn of Shri 420, before that we went to a meeting about RK and his music in films, quite an interesting meeting with a musician and then a fan of RK films too.
it has been so touching listening to a professional in music, a guy from the west saying the same exact things I felt about Raj Kapoor, at some moment this musician, whose name is Paolo Scarnecchia, was pointing to us how RK could reach his audience through "a wave of warmth" the warm of his feelings... I could have said word for word all that he was saying, the innocent gaze of the little vagabond, his humanity... if this wasn't touching enough, later it has come the totally unforgettable expierience of watching my all time beloved movie, again at the beautiful old Odeon Cinema in Florence, with friends...
The copy they did use was original, not a dvd or something and fortunately it all has worked well...you know how it could be with old movies...
Needless to say that during that day I felt happy, more happy than ever before, I knew I had something more in my life, some more richness inside coming from the beauty of watching Shri 420 at the cinema.
Of course I did notice before how handsome Raj saab was, but watching him on a big screen has made me live some unforgettable moments I can barely write and put on words.
I could follow the entire film without reading subtitles for the so many times I had already watched this film on my tiny tv set.
So I could appreciate every single second of it, the songs, the dialogs, costumes and the magic this film can create again and again...looked quite as Raj saab himself was around us during those couple of days...I wish he could have been alive and knowing...maybe somehow he knows how he can touch and let his audience dream, hope and feel a better person through this film all over again.
I wish he could be here now as I could thank and bow to him again and again for the beauty, humanity and innocence he has created with his art/heart.
Of course at the end of the movie the applause has come again, and I left Florence a happier person, aware of the fact that this experience maybe has made me a better person, it has caused my sense of life to grow in a dense and sweet mood.
Wherever you are, thank you so much Raj saab, you heart was big enough to reduce whatever distance between us!

A poem for Raj KAPOOR - PAIN
When blossom the flowers of cherry tree
A cheerful rain silvery
was spilling to us
And
The days were smiling
And
The nights were so eternal....
On the earth
The jasmins
Under the stars shining
And
Under that moonlight
were strewing
with a faithful whiteness
so limpid...
The joy of spring
passed a long time ago
O my youth
Now
The jasmins
And
That moonlight
With his stars shining
Wore a dark pain
In heart sing a song icy...
The joy of spring
passed long time ago
O my heart
Now
The time brings from far
And plants in me
A pain
wearing by a remorse cruel
Without faithfulness...

The Raj Kapoor Factor In Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Firstly the simpleton character of Shah Rukh Khan (whose screen name is Surinder Sahni in RAB NE...) seems to be inspired by the simple, lovable ragamuffin/vagabond played by the legend, Raj Kapoor in his AWARA/ANARI days. Notice the simplicity and SRK's soft, soothing dialogue delivery style (Surinder Sahni this side ji!) which tug at the heart, much similar to Raj Kapoor's characters in his hey days. Then we have the couple logo of the R.K.Films (more like a dancing couple here) which makes an appearance in the promos and the posters of RAB NE BANA DI JODI And last but not the least, the original showman and his family's presence is highly pronounced in the brilliant dance track, 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte', where King Khan pays homage to the greats of Bollywood. And topping the list is of course Raj Kapoor followed by his brother, the great dancing star, Shammi Kapoor and the number ends with his youngest son, the super actor, Rishi Kapoor.

Raj kapoor add to this movie many emotions.
Two friend, that go to vacations on they car. Two friend but so different from each others. Pran (Raj kapoor) fell in love with a poor girl that not learns noting about the life. Pran woes love her so when she woes in his arm he woes Cry and answer in Different way….:
“There no life without laughter and Tears. These Joys and sorrows for the design of love. Without tears real love doesn’t exist.
Smiling Flowers, Crying dew drops the combination of beauty and love. Is beautiful that happened when you in love. That is why love is measured not in terms of time but in terms of longing.”
What make Raj Kapoor Say same thing like that?
And why after She missing and He think she diet. His friend takes him for a woman. He doesn’t like it but he touches the woman feet why?
Human Values
Like Ritu Nanda write in her books Raj kapoor Woes Maybe young on 23 years old but in his eyes that he sees already every thing and Know many things that people like us don’t learn in 23 Years old.
The movie Barsaat make with many Emotions of Love.
About the part that Raj kapoor answer to Nargis after she see him cry. It the true about the life. Every one cry or laugh in his life we always have bad moments in our life and also bad.
True Love wily can’t exist with out tears. If you well look around you see many people that Cry when they in love. In English movie when man tell a woman that he love her and she don’t know this she smile but with tears in the eyes. When same one asks a woman to marry him she smile and have tears in the same time. When the man go and leave the woman back in home and go to army they cry and smile and when he be back and they hug they again and cry again this time from happiness. This in are life in the same screen Raj Kapoor not cry because she sing her song. Like he say Love don’t have time it just happened like that. Before Raj Kapoor Cry he smile to Nargis in the beginning and then a minute latter he get sad Same time the tears comes with out you know this. This what happened when you love.
Even it happened to me when I hear same song that I wily love and it sound so nice to my hears I don’t know how because I start to cry then. I even don’t know why but this is the real way of love.
Woman Honors.
Like I Know Raj Kapoor always give honors to Woman. He says the woman is the person that bring us to life and give us life with out we woes can’t keep our generation.
Human Values.
The friend takes him to same woman that seal love. He don’t like at and don’t won't to go in and even touch her. Then he hear a baby cry the woman go to the room and take the kids in her Hand he ask her about his father and she say that he don’t know that he have a child. He sees how much the kid sick and leave to her same money and touch her like and leave.
Raj kapoor try to show the way of the woman that seal they love for the sick of They kids The touching Legs Mean:
Like I Say before Raj Kapoor woes give honor to the woman. That she woes seal her lover for her sick kids. Because this Raj kapoor Touch her Legs. In India you give people honor by touching they legs. After he understands why she does at he gives her honor.
Then when He Back to his friend He tells him that she a mother and his friend ask why? He answer “Not a woman love she going to sold but a mother love. You don’t understand you are modern thinking”
This Also the true about our life and same of them stile exist. Same woman work for they family in this way.
This true what Raj say to the his friend same People know about that and same people know that this exist but they close they eyes.
This movie have a lot Human Values many emotions Even the Songs about the true about the life in our life and the music give at moor design of Love and emotions.
This movie is not a film maker It emotions it human Values.
That why no one can Remake this movie and even can get to the way of Raj kapoor Making movies.
Making Films is something else. Being human is something else.
When you mix it that Our Raj Kapoor.

A poem For Raj Kapoor - Mera Naam Joker
Now,
Time, is a long movie, black and white
gets wet
in my hands...
Now,
Time, is a automn's bird, rainy
looks by my eyes
weary...
A solitude invisible
In the wardrobes
runs away from the crowd
by the shadow plays...
And
In the twilight of the sunset
A joker, old-fashioned, shouts slowly:
" The game is over
Close the curtains ! "

When gopal come to her it woes so lattes She already woes dead.
My Preview about the movie.
Barsaat is one of Raj Kapoor movie that I wily like.
Barsaat is a Romantic and touching movies about love with a romantic Shooting Place.
Raj Kapoor and Nargis look so young in this movie and so lovely we can fell the beginning of there love story.
This movie includes many Amazing Background music with amazing Soundtrack songs. Amazing Star cast and must best Jodi Raj Kapoor and Nargis Dutt in the beginning way with there company Rk.
Best action of Raj Kapoor and Nargis even Prem Nath woes give an amazing preferment’s.
In this movie also Raj woes use the Dark Effect what make the movie moor Romantic.
There one part in the movie that looks interesting to me is the part when Resma (Nargis) Clean the Dishes and Pran play the violin. Nargis move her hair from her eyes in the way that She woes move her hair with the hands when Raj Kapoor First meets her.
The best part in the movie is the part when Nargis fold in Raj kapoor hands in the way like the Violin. I know it also woes the best part for Raj Kapoor After all He make this screen to be is Company Icon.
Moor best thing in the movie is the English song that Raj Kapoor Play on the Violin.
Today it rains her with lighting. I looking in the windows and see the rain and the light’s. I remember the movie and start to understand how the film woes connect to the Rain. When Rain is coming, People Name at the Romantic time. And same time when you sad like in the movie the Rain can be also you love tears.

THE SMELL OF THOUSANDS CARNATION
Snow is about falling
Night approaches
Through my window winter settle in
from my eyes to yours starry celestial passing by
my bossom being fondled by thousands of carnation
Therein from my eyes serenely I am collecting the stars
Autumn wind in the thick of my hair and hands
I am escape from my self
To face with solemn images of my face
That bleeding
Breaking in to thousands at mirrors
Snow is about falling
Night approaches
Through my window winter settle in
Time afterall is a locker marching backwards
blooming by the smell of thousands carnation

Raj kapoor about Amitabh Bachchan
Now that Amitabh Bachchan has entered the battle, on the side of the film industry, the industry is confident that it will overpower the wicked government and win.
Raj Kapoor, the well-known film-maker, was telling me about this am casting Amitabh with Dharmendra, no more of this Sunil Dutt. I mean, he is alright taking out these morchas and making representations to the government, but our fight has gone beyond that stage. Assisting the two will be Hema Malini and Rekha, but the women are there mainly to keep the government interested in the strike.
How will Amitabh end the strike? I asked.
I am still working on the script,Raj Kapoor said. But he is a mard and naturally he will use his two hands, his six-shooter, his sword, the helicopter from which he will jump on Mantralaya etc. in between, there may be one or tow songs, or three or four, but that is once again only so that the government does not lose interest in the strike. Already it seems to have forgotten that the industry is on strike.
Will Amitabh fight the government as an actor or as an MP or as a minister-to-be or what? I asked.
You know he is a master of disguises, so he will be wearing various disguises and fighting the government, one minute MP, one minute Aaj Ka MLA, one minute orphan in search of his lost brother, who finally will turn out to be Mithun Chakravorty, the dancer, Raj Kapoor said. By the time the finishes with the government, it will wish it had never introduced the new sales tax.
You strike leaders think of every thing, I said.
We have to, Raj Kapoor said. After all, we are fighting the government, not just Amjad Khan or Pran or Prem Chopra. The government, not just Amjad Khan government will have the police on their side, but the people will be on our side. Shashi Kapoor will play an honest police officer, grey hair on the temples etc., whose conscience will not allow him to carry out the government's orders.
It is going to be a battle royal, I said.
Yes, royalty also will be there, he said. One of the older actresses will play a maharani and Saeed Jaffrey will be her diwan-e-khans. Once you decide to defy the government, and work Amitabh into the script, you have to go all out.
Absolutely, I said. When do you plan to let Amitabh lead the fight?
Once the strike has ended and we can start making films again, naturally, Raj Kapoor said.

Raj Kapoor ChildHood
I was very fair, with blue eyes. My Father’s actresses used to cuddle me whenever I visited the stage, and I used to feel very excited. But even that early I had learnt the art of concealing emotions. I was extremely precocious. And I was a worshipper of nudity. I think it all started because of my intimacy with my mother who was young, beautiful, and had the sharp features of a Pathan woman.
I think it all started because of my intimacy with my mother who was young, beautiful, and had the sharp features of a Pathan woman. We often bathed together, and seeing her in the nude must have left a deep erotic impression on my mind. There is an excellent Urdu phrase, muqaddas uriyan (sacred nudity), which describes this perfectly. In my films, bathing scenes recur often. Women in general occupy most of my early memories, and they appear in my films like ghosts that refuse to be buried.
We had once gone to Lyallpur in western Punjab, now in Pakistan, which is my father’s birthplace. My great grandfather was the tehsildar there, and the villagers held the family in great respect. An earthen oven was always kept lit in the center of the village, and women roasted chana on the fire. I remember having gone to buy chana wearing a shirt and nothing under it. The woman at the oven had an odd smile on her face as she said: ‘You don’t have to pay for the chana, just raise your shirt and make a bowl out of it.' I did, and stood like that, and she laughed her head off looking at me.
I was totally innocent. Years later when this memory came back to me and I understood the trick she must have been up to, it disturbed me a great deal. For some time in my life, chana itself become almost a *** object. It might have come back into my cinema at a subconscious level. There’s a scene in Bobby when the boy flashes a mirror into Bobby’s face while she’s sitting in the library. The girl comes out, first in rage, and then in playfulness. The boy says, ‘Let’s have tea.’ Bobby says, ‘No, let’s have chana.’
I was a precocious child. I was always aware of my surroundings. In Lyallpur, my great grandfather, the tehsildar, used to go plucking cotton and we kids would go with him because it was fun. One day, probably because of the heat, I must have wandered away to rest in the shade of a tree and gone off to sleep. At sunset, they missed me. My grandmother started howling and shouting. All of a sudden Ramu, the sweeper, an untouchable, brought me home and said, ‘Forgive me that I touched him. I’ve carried him here.’ He apologized with folded hands. I was not permitted to come into the house. My mother was asked to bathe me first, because an untouchable had touched me. I didn’t know the implications of all this then, but I knew that what was being done was wrong.

We lived in Calcutta for eight years, returning to Bombay when I was fourteen. We lived on Hazra Raod near Kalighat. My father went to work every day on a bicycle. New Theaters was not very far away. I studied in St. Xavier’s School. In my neighborhood, everybody used to call me ‘Prithvi chhele.’ I was the pampered brat. Neighborhood weddings, Durga puja pandals, local musical soirees – I was a permanent fixture everywhere.
Everybody in our family is fond of food. That is the reason why the young and the old are all obese. As a child I too was very fat. My mother, giving me the example of my father, would always nag me to exercise.
While sending me to school, she would pack an omelette and chapatti for me. But my taste buds were always looking for new flavours… There were three or four eating-places, which I used to visit regularly.
My allowance was only two annas a day, which was not enough to meet. This expense. So I would stop my credit at one shop and open an account at another. Once the credit got beyond my means. I would sell a book or two….I would return home from school and give back the packed meal to my mother, saying that I didn’t eat it because I was on a diet. Her concern and love would make her feed me even more!
In school I was very fond of acting. My father was a great actor; so I through that it was my privilege and my prerogative to become a great actor as well. It so happened that our school staged a passion play. The most paramount thing in my mind was that every child who worked in that passion play given three coupons to eat sandwiches, samosas and coffee and ice cream- all sorts of beautiful things to eat. I got a costume…like a cassock that Fathers wore…a bit too long for my short size.
Anyway.we were supposed to go once or twice behind Christ, shouting hosanna.hosanna.hosanna. I did that once, I did it twice, and being an exuberant actor, I went in for the third entry, which was not supposed to be there. When I entered the stage, my foot got caught in the cassock I was wearing, and I fell down right in front in front of a very serious Christ, and people laughed and Christ also laughed. I was happy that I had made Christ laugh. When the curtain comes down, the drama master caught me by the neck. He hit me, and said, 'You are an actor? Your father is an actor? I think you are a donkey! You get out and don't come back again!' My coupons were taken away and I didn't get any sandwiches, I didn't get any ice cream.I didn't get any cake and I didn't get any samosas!
My childhood memories are pitted with indelible scars of experience. I was a fatty. Every sort of practical joke was ‘played on me)… apart from some vivid patches of happiness (my childhood years) were quite miserable. These patches of happiness were the occasions when I fell in love, but more of that later. To return to the miserable moments I soon packed up the most natural defence mechanism – the one used by all the great jokers of the world. I learnt that the more one resisted being a target, the more one suffered.
So, instead, I put on the mask of a joker by reacting as through I thoroughly enjoyed being made the butt of practical jokes. Indeed, I even took this a step further by inventing jokes on myself, which would make my colleagues laugh. You see, I was seeking that which every schoolboy seeks- the love, affection and esteem of others.
I wanted to be liked. I had un unlimited capacity to love and to be loved and it was not long before I fell in love…once, twice, thrice…and so forth. All these experiences began crystallizing into a rough and ready philosophy of life in my formative years…In (school) dramas and plays; I began to put into practice my theory of being liked and also being in the spotlight. I found that the audience at those school dramas tended to grow restive during long dreary passages. So, right in the middle of them, I would casually do something funny and totally unrelated to the proceedings and get involuntary giggles from the frontbenchers. I’d follow that up with another little funny thing, and the giggles would become laughter, and spread from the frontbenchers right through the house to the backbenches.
Thus I learned the rudimentary lessons in ‘scene-stealing’…I began adding to my storehouse of experiences, which I was to carry forward to the time when, many years later, I moved inevitably into films.
In Mera Naam Joker, the child's crush on his beautiful teacher, played by Simi Garewal, is no fantasy of the scriptwriter. I was a great favourite of women teachers in very school that I attended. My first school was the New Era Boys' School on Hughes Road Bombay, where the teachers would queue up to kiss me! I was in the prep class then, and I used to get irritated with them and ask them, 'Why do you kiss me? Are you my mother?' Undaunted, they would kiss me more! I was very fond of one of these teachers. Once we had gone out on a picnic with this teacher when we saw a large flock of birds winging into the evening sky.
It came back years later in a sequence in Mera Naam Joker with the song 'Titar ke do aage titar..' I got so attached to this teacher at age six, that when my father took up a ob with New
Theatres and we had to shift to Calcutta, I dug my heels in, telling my parents that I would rather stay at the school hostel than pack up and leave. In my last few days in Bombay, I used to bring her flowers. It was a tearful parting.
White is my favourite colour and it is deeply rooted in my mind in my heart. I remember to this day how the colour white came to be imprinted in my memory. We were living in Calcutta. One morning, as I was getting ready to go to school, I heard my mother tell the cook to buy chickens as some friends of my father were expected for lunch. Chicken! My mouth began to water. I decided to play truant that afternoon and return home for lunch. Father and his guests were already seated at the table when I entered the dining room. 'There is no school today?' Papa-ji asked me sternly. 'No' I mumbled, avoiding his eye, 'it is a half-day.'
Among the guests was a young woman. She was dressed in white. I looked at her, and I could not look away. She seemed to me to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The guests stayed all afternoon and I too hung around the house. I had fallen in love with her of course.
Then it was time for them to go. They were saying farewell. I went into the garden in front of the house. I plucked some creamy white tuberose. And I was still plucking them when the woman in white came down the steps. Stammering and blushing, I gave her the fragrant gift. She took the flowers from me, murmuring her pleasure. She walked through the garden and onto the road. Turn around, I pleaded in my heart. Just this once! Please look back! But she did not turn She was gone forever and I could not forget her.
Ever since it has been an endless search for the ideal which always recedes, leaving only the white flowers as visible evidence of the search.
I remember Principal Soares. He was also the Latin teacher and Latin was the second language in those days. In the examinations, when the Latin paper came up, I wrote, 'Latin is a dead language, why dig up the buried?' I got one mark out of a hundred and that too complimentary. Principal Soares said, 'Unfortunately, boy, I can't anything as far as your academic education is concerned. You are otherwise brilliant, and you have the world before you!'
